Puma Hubkits

Latest: Motors are in the uk.

All motors are 500W and 320rpm, (approx speed at 36V is 25mph) The rear motors can only accomodate a single speed free wheel. All motors have plastic gears at this stage, we are having steel gears made at the moment.

There is a threaded boss that will accept a screw on disc brake.

Phase wires have been upgraded to 15G from 18G. These are not BMC motors, all Puma motors will have TEAM HYBRID PUMA stamped on the casing with a serial No.

All motors will come with one years warranty when run at 36V-48V. We have run these at 72V as have some of our customers but we have no long term data. As such we cannot offer any warranty at 72V.

Controllers After months and months of hard work and lots of $$'s the controllers and motors are finally sitting here waiting for the road test. Strict instructions were given for the motor Hall and Phase wires to be colour to colour in other words plug and play. So motor and wheel went in the bike, controller was bolted on and connected, battery connected, throttle on, switch on and..... a big fat nothing.

Lots of frustrating hours later we finally gave up. A phone call was made to Steve Labib and arrangements made to send said controller and motor to him for evaluation.

It turns out that the Crystalyte controller has changed spec. Up until now all Crystalyte controllers have been analogue, without letting anyone know they have changed the big controllers and they are now digital. Steve has worked hard and tried to get both controller and motor running smoothly but no joy.

I have spoken to Kenny at Crystalyte and arrangements have been made to ship all the controllers and a motor back to him next week. This will take up to a week. The Chinese New Year is then two weeks (Kenny is only taking one week) He will get work on the controllers to get them compatable with the motor, this is going to take the best part of three weeks before they get back here.

This is so frustrating as i know you guys have been waiting a long time for these kits. All i can suggest at this moment is that those of you who already have 35A+ Crystalyte controllers who want the Puma motors can go ahead a purchase them. Others will have to wait till they get back. USA customers buying controllers fron ebikes.ca please make sure that the controllers are analogue not the new digital ones. Motor price below.

As far as batteries go we only have expensive choices at the moment. We have the Saft Ni-MH 36V 9ah and 36V 14.5AH both these modules are rated at 40A but they cannot be run in series.

We also have Heinzmann Ni-MH 36V 8AH. These can be run in series but again are mega expensive.

We are trying to source reliable Lithiums but this is proving to be difficult.

Puma Hub motor

The PUMA hub motor is light and very well made, removal of the motor front plate exposes the motor windings which are fixed in to the inside stem of the motor, the rotor and magnets spin in the opposite direction, on the outside of the rotor the gear is fixed, this in turn drives the hub of the motor around the axle.

The gear reduction is 5:1.

The phase and hall wiring exits through an 8mm hole inside the axle, with approx 150mm of cable extending for both the phase and hall wiring.

In motion the PUMA motor freewheels very nicely with no drag, under low speed the motor has finite control, it is possible to move at very slow speeds smoothly all the way up to full speed with no Jumps to full speed or any notchy jumps in speed.

The low down acceleration of the PUMA is very impressive, it has very good torque indeed and keeps pulling right up to the top speed where it settles nicely. The motor is not noisy however it is more noisy than a none geared hub motor and it is marginally noisier than a Currie USPD, this isn't really a problem and in traffic it is not noticeable.

The hill climbing capability of the PUMA is also very impressive indeed, steep grades can be attacked with relative ease in fact in a 20 inch wheel it will spin the front tyre easily going up ramps in car parks.

An important note is that this motor must be fitted with a torque arm and must not be fitted to aluminium suspension forks, even with a torque arm this motor could possibly damage or even snap the fork drop outs, steel forks are recommended.

The PUMA its relatively light has little free wheel resistance and has great top speed, its easy to fit, its very adaptable for different battery configurations and uses a tested and known motor controller.
